A guide to fishing opportunities and other attractions in and around the River.
By Anonymous July 14, 2004 -- NewburyportBluesCruise.com, MyTownLive.com , SignsByDoug.com and 92.9 WBOS present Newburyport’s 6th Annual Yankee Homecoming BluesCruise, the Merrimack River Boat Cruise of the Summer featuring Blues and Gospel legend “Mr. Sweet Willie D. and the Continental Walk” with lead and slide guitarist “J. Laite”. The musical career of Sweet Willie began in the choirs of the Baptist churches of South Jersey in the Sixties. In 1975 got his first taste of the blues at the local juke joints in San Antonio, Texas. From these roots Sweet Willie has developed a unique style, blending the soul and gospel feel of his upbringing with down home blues. Acquiring the title “the Deacon of the Blues”, Willie has performed with such notables as Luther “Guitar Jr.” Johnson, Roomful of Blues, K.D. Bell and “Evil Gal” Michelle Wilson. Special guest “J. Laite” has performed throughout the U.S. and abroad, and is best known for his riveting lead and slide guitar performances. Featured on bass guitar is Sven Larson with percussionist Greg Roberts. With the blues of the Mississippi Delta to Chicago’s “South Side”, this memorable evening cruising Newburyport’s historic waterfront is not to be missed! This relaxing river cruise sets sail on the Merrimac river and is a very gentle cruise with minimal "rocking and rolling" of the boat. A cash bar is available and the event is accessible to the physically challenged. The boat departs at 7:00 pm and returns at 10:00 pm. Tickets are $25.ºº per person and are available online. Tickets outlets are at Captain’s Fishing Parties, Plum Island Point, Newburyport, (800) 427-1333 or (978) 462-3141, and Dyno Records, 1 Middle St., Newburyport (978) 462-9630.
